Commonwealth Champion Masterclass – Owen Livsey

2014 Commonwealth Games judo champion Owen Livsey came to Leigh Judo Club on Sunday delivering a masterclass at our new home in Lowton. Livsey is the current Commonwealth Champion in the under-81kg category and is ranked number 1 in the UK and 40 in the world after narrowly missing out on selection for the Rio Olympics.

A former rugby league academy player for St Helens RFLC, Owen has medaled in a number of tournament and competitions including the British Open in London in 2015 and took several World Cup medals and victories in Port Louis, Santiago, Buenos Aires and Glasgow. Owen also took a silver medal at the 2017 European Cup in Bratislava.

Additional surprise

Owen was joined by his tallented Team GB sisters, Amy Livsey and Becky Livsey who were fresh from their international success in Budapest Grand Prix and Baku Grand slam. The Livsey masterclass included two 90-minute sessions, introducing new warm-up routines, and advanced groundwork and throwing techniques to over 30 junior and senior club members. It was great to see many of the members asking questions and gaining insight into high level judo. It was particularly special to have Amy and Becky on the mat as strong positive role models for our young girls on the mat.

Head coach Luke Brown said: “Its great to have Owen here providing motivation and new skills. Our members really loved the chance to meet an experienced international judo player and even got the chance to fight with him as well. All the senior players loved the masterclass and enjoyed the technical learning. The day was made more special with Amy and Becky joining in and providing support on the mat. The female members in particular really looked up to Amy and Becky and felt inspired. It was a great day!”

With the goal of increasing confidence, teaching self defence and having fun, our club has continued to grow since securing a purpose built facility in the heart of Lowton. We’re always open to new members and everyone is welcome to a free first session to try judo.
